Selection Process
The preliminary screening focused on basic English proficiency to ensure adequate and unambiguous expressions of concepts and thoughts. The resulting subset of the essays then was subjected to three stages of evaluation. In stage I, each essay was reviewed by two of the eleven jury members. As a result, 51 essays were selected. Then, in stage II, five judges read every one of the 51 works and passed 21 essays for selection of the winners. Finally, in stage III, each of a panel of four judges independently reviewed all 21 essays and voted for the three top prize winners. Four Iris Chang Youth Awards and 14 Honorable Mentions among these 21 writers were also chosen. A note on the Iris Chang Youth Awards this year: an additional award was given due to a tie. The remaining 30 of the 51 essays evaluated in stage II were recognized as the Essays of Distinction. Among the 30 Essays of Distinction, 12 (40%) were written by high school students.
